Liver Enzyme ALT

Table of contents

Description

ALT (alanine aminotransferase), sometimes labeled SGPT, is an enzyme found mostly in liver cells. When liver cells are irritated or injured, ALT can leak into the bloodstream. That’s why ALT is commonly used as a practical screening marker for liver inflammation and metabolic liver stress.

Why it matters

Mild ALT elevation is common and is often driven by fatty liver / metabolic dysfunction (especially when paired with insulin resistance, higher triglycerides, or central adiposity). ALT can also rise from alcohol, viral hepatitis, medications/supplements, and (less commonly) autoimmune or genetic liver disease.

What higher or lower results can suggest (general education)

  • Higher ALT: fatty liver, viral hepatitis, alcohol-related injury, medication/supplement effects, or acute illness. Strenuous exercise can also raise liver enzymes in some contexts.

  • Low ALT: usually not clinically meaningful.

How to interpret ALT in context

ALT is best interpreted with AST, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, and the overall clinical picture (alcohol pattern, meds/supplements, viral risk, training load). Persistent elevation typically prompts evaluation of metabolic factors and targeted liver workup.

Educational only, not medical advice. If ALT is persistently elevated or very high, or if there are symptoms like jaundice, dark urine, or right-upper-quadrant pain, seek clinical evaluation.
